Journey through the varied natural ecoregions of the state, from the High Plains and Trans-Pecos in the west to the Pineywoods of East Texas.
A diverse variety of wildlife, from the common species you might spot today to the rare and threatened creatures fighting for survival, are on view. Among the highlights are the museum’s historic legacy dioramas—the American bison trio and the mountain lion display—which first captivated audiences on campus in Gregory Gym during the University Centennial Exposition in 1936.
You’ll also find lifelike hand-painted models of Texas reptiles and dioramas showcasing the remarkable variety of bird species that inhabit Texas. In the Night Shift exhibit, delve into the world of Texas’ nocturnal animals—those that are most active under the cover of darkness.
